Frequently Asked Questions

What is biomanufacturing?

Biomanufacturing is the production of biological products, such as vaccines and other biopharmaceuticals, using living cells or biological systems. Roles include operating equipment, monitoring processes, and following regulated procedures. CASTL offers hands-on, industry-informed training to help learners build these skills and prepare for jobs in the sector.

How do I start a biomanufacturing career in Canada with no experience?

Start with a program built for career entry. CASTL Elevate offers a fast-track option with career readiness support and hands-on training for entry-level roles. Eligible BC and PEI residents can also apply to free reskilling programs. Not sure which fits? Use CASTL's program finder or speak with a program advisor.

What is GMP, and why do employers require it?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice, the quality standards that regulated industries follow so products are made consistently and safely. Employers in biomanufacturing look for people who already understand GMP and can work in regulated environments. CASTL's hands-on training helps learners build that understanding before their first day on the job.

What is GDP and why do employers value it?

GDP stands for Good Documentation Practice: the standards for recording data and completing records accurately, legibly, and in real time in regulated workplaces. Employers require it because in biomanufacturing, an action that isn't properly documented is treated as if it didn't happen. Accurate records support product quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance, so employers value candidates who document correctly from day one.

Are there free biomanufacturing training programs in BC or PEI?

Yes. CASTL's BC Bioscience Reskilling Program and PEI Bioscience Reskilling Program are free for eligible residents. Both are 10-week programs for people looking to launch a career in bioscience who are unemployed or underemployed. Eligibility depends on your province, age or education, and student status, so check the criteria below.

Who is eligible for the BC Bioscience Reskilling Program?

The program is for BC residents aged 15 to 30 who are not full-time students, and it is intended for unemployed or underemployed people. It is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, subject to province-specific requirements. Work permit holders and student visa holders are not eligible.

Can work permit holders or international students take CASTL programs?

CASTL Elevate is a 4-week hybrid program: three weeks online plus four days in person. It costs $250 plus tax, and eligible travel expenses are covered. Participants receive career readiness support and hands-on training to prepare for entry-level biomanufacturing roles. Canadian citizenship or permanent residency is required.

What is the difference between BIS Foundations and BIS Industry Essentials?

BIS Foundations is a self-paced virtual program ($250 plus tax) for early-career scientists looking to enter industry. BIS Industry Essentials ($175 plus tax) is for non-scientists who want to learn the business of biotech. Both are part of the BioInnovation Scientist (BIS) Program.

What is the difference between CASTL short courses and the CASTL Online Academy?

Short courses are instructor-led by industry experts, offered on demand or on fixed dates, and held in Charlottetown, Montreal, and Vancouver. The CASTL Online Academy is self-paced and virtual. Both suit all levels of biomanufacturing capability, and prices vary by course.

Where does CASTL offer training?

CASTL has facilities in Charlottetown (PEI), Montreal (Quebec), and Richmond (BC, in the Vancouver area). Location varies by program: some are virtual, others hybrid or in person. Check each program page for the format and site.

How do I choose the right program?

Consider your background, your goals, your province, and your residency status. Early-career scientists, career changers, and those wanting a fast route to entry-level roles each have a different best fit. Use CASTL's program finder for a quick recommendation, or book time with a program advisor to talk through your options.
