From Compliance to Competence: Advancing Canada’s Life Sciences Workforce

Completing training doesn’t always mean a worker is ready to perform independently.

In her op-ed on TheFutureEconomy.ca, Lee McKinley, Director of Learning & Development at the Canadian Alliance for Skills & Training in Life Sciences (CASTL), argues that Canada’s life sciences sector must move beyond measuring course completion and focus on demonstrated competence in the workplace.

She calls for organizations to track “time-to-competence,” i.e., how quickly workers can perform safely and independently, and to better align training systems with real-world performance.
