The Reskilling Program introduces learners to a variety of topics designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to start a successful career in the bioscience industry.

Designed by CASTL, with input from industry and subject matter experts from the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT), the Reskilling Program is offered as part of select universities' curriculum.

Program

The PEI Bioscience Reskilling Program provides six weeks of facilitated learning  followed by four  weeks of  on-the-job training with industry employers. Participating in this program will give you the essential knowledge and skills to apply for entry-level positions with opportunities to build a rewarding career.

This program is funded by the Department of Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture through the Canada-PEI Labour Market Agreements.

Applicants admitted to the program may be eligible for a cost of living subsidy including child care and travel-related costs if applicable.

Successful applicants for the Reskilling Program will be introduced to a variety of topics designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to start a successful career in the bioscience industry including:

  • Overview of the biosciences industry
  • Good manufacturing practice/good laboratory practice
  • Laboratory science
  • Fundamental mathematics
  • Instrumentation and data analysis
  • Health and safety

The Bioscience Reskilling Program is a fast-paced course that delivers a lot of information over a short period of time. Successful applicants will be expected to attend all classes/labs and successfully complete all assignments and quizzes during the initial six-week training period. Students will be expected to complete assigned work on evenings and weekends. Student attendance and completion of all coursework is considered mandatory and required to obtain the official course certificate.

Applicants must:
Be underemployed or unemployed at the time of application (work less than 25 hours per week)
Have a grade 12 diploma. Further post-secondary education or relevant work experience would be considered an asset

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Reside in Prince Edward Island
  • Demonstrate English proficiency
  • Be able to work independently and safely
  • Be able to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time
  • Have access to reliable transportation as travel to employer sites
  • will be required during the on-the-job training component of the program
  • Be able and willing to work evenings and weekends when required

Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident:
To qualify for the 10-week CASTL Bioscience Reskilling Program applicants must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

  • Background in science-related learning or employment is considered an asset
  • Experience in a production or manufacturing environment considered an asset
  • Inventory control experience considered an asset
  • Effective time-management skills and ability to multi-task
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Detailed-oriented

Following completion of the program, you will be eligible to apply to various entry-level positions including:

  • Quality Control Technologist
  • Production Technician
  • Aerosols Technician
  • Research Technician
  • Process Technician
